Trump meets Zelenskyy and Netanyahu separately at White House on Ukraine and Lebanon

Magnitude 7.1 earthquake and mall collapse kill at least 13 in southern Japan

A powerful earthquake struck Kumamoto prefecture on Japan's southwestern island of Kyushu at 4:27 p.m. local time Tuesday, triggering tsunami advisories for the Ariake and Yatsushiro Seas that were lifted within two hours. Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi said at least 13 people had died, including several killed when part of an Aeon shopping mall in Kumamoto City collapsed after a gas explosion tore through the complex roughly an hour after the quake; dozens of employees were initially unaccounted for. The 10-kilometer-deep quake, revised by the US Geological Survey to magnitude 6.8, also buckled bridges, damaged a historic castle, cut power to about 40,000 homes, and halted Kyushu's bullet trains.
