Bessent unveils "economic D-Day" sanctions push on Iran as Tehran threatens to shut Hormuz
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent held a news conference on August 23, 2026 to unveil what he called an "economic D-Day" against Iran, describing it in a Financial Times op-ed as "the single greatest financial offensive ever marshalled against an adversary" and telling CNBC it amounts to the greatest campaign of "coordinated economic isolation in the history of the world." The sanctions target not only Tehran but foreign companies, banks and governments that keep providing Iran commercial lifelines. Iranian security chief Mohsen Rezaei responded that if the economic war continues, "not a single drop of oil will be exported, neither through the Strait of Hormuz nor from anywhere in the Persian Gulf," and Iran separately warned that ships violating transit rules in the strait could face detention or confiscation.

Wind-driven Hawk Fire forces tens of thousands to flee Reno, Nevada
The human-caused Hawk Fire, which broke out Saturday, August 22, 2026 in the Sierra Nevada foothills, grew to more than 15,000 acres and was zero percent contained as of Sunday, August 23, as high winds pushed it rapidly into residential neighborhoods on Reno's northern edge. DR Congo and M23-led rebel alliance agree roadmap for peace talks after Swiss negotiations
The Democratic Republic of the Congo and the AFC/M23 rebel alliance agreed on August 23, 2026 to a roadmap setting out sequenced steps and timelines for negotiating the remaining protocols of the Doha Framework peace agreement they signed in November 2025. Tropical Storm Moke passed south of Hawaii's Big Island on August 23, 2026 with maximum sustained winds near 45 mph, bringing 5 to 10 inches of rain with isolated totals up to 15 inches to the island and raising the risk of life-threatening flooding and mudslides in terrain already saturated by Hurricane Lala roughly a week earlier.
