Israel's air force carried out two airstrikes early Monday, September 7, 2026, on the village of Kfar Reman in southern Lebanon, hitting a residential building and killing at least nine people, including two children, and wounding thirteen others. A separate Israeli drone strike on a civilian vehicle in the same town killed two paramedics inside the car. Bosnia recalls embassy staff from Serbia after state funeral honors war criminal Ratko Mladic

Bosnia and Herzegovina announced on Monday, September 7, 2026, that it would withdraw staff from its embassy in Belgrade and suspend bilateral meetings with Serbia, in protest of Serbia's glorification of convicted war criminal Ratko Mladic at his state funeral, which drew thousands of mourners and full military honors. Foreign Minister Elmedin Konakovic said all embassy staff he has authority to recall would be withdrawn, with consular services shifted to Bosnia's embassies in Zagreb and Podgorica and its consulate in Novi Pazar; he said he would have severed ties completely but that power rests with the country's tripartite presidency, where Bosnian Serb representatives hold a veto. Mladic, convicted of genocide and war crimes for his role in the Bosnian war including the Srebrenica massacre, died last week while serving a life sentence.

US gas and diesel prices hit all-time Labor Day highs amid Iran war disruption

US fuel prices set records heading into the Labor Day weekend of September 2026, with regular gasoline averaging $4.14 a gallon nationally, nearly a dollar higher than a year earlier and well above the prior Labor Day record of $3.82 set in 2012, marking the first time gas has topped $4 on the holiday. Diesel hit an all-time high of $5.85 a gallon. Analysts attributed the surge to the ongoing US-Israel war on Iran, refinery constraints, and sharply reduced crude oil traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, which Iran has refused to reopen since the conflict began in February; the Trump administration's energy secretary said prices were "more likely to go down than go up."

Germany's Merz vows to press on with reforms despite AfD's landslide state election win

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said Monday, September 7, 2026, that he was "deeply shocked" by the Christian Democrats' worst state election result in decades after the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) won a landslide in Saxony-Anhalt, falling just three seats short of an outright majority. Merz declared "giving up is not an option for me" and vowed to keep pushing through unpopular economic and migration reforms, arguing Germany must defend its freedoms against Russia even as the AfD's win piles pressure on his coalition and raises questions about whether the party could soon lead a German state government for the first time in the postwar era.
