Zelenskyy's plane nearly hit by drone during Russian incursion into Moldovan airspace
A Russian jet-propelled drone entered Moldovan airspace on Tuesday, September 9, 2026, closing the country's airspace and delaying Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's departure from Chisinau, where his plane was waiting on the tarmac, as he traveled to Oslo for the funeral of Norway's King Harald V. Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store said Zelenskyy's aircraft was nearly hit before it was cleared for takeoff once the drone came down and exploded roughly 160 kilometers (100 miles) from the airport. Zelenskyy went on to attend the funeral in Oslo on Wednesday and traveled onward to Canada, where he was due to address Prime Minister Mark Carney's cabinet.

Trump says Iran war will end 'immediately' after US midterm elections
President Donald Trump told reporters on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, en route to a Republican midterm convention in Dallas, that he believes the war with Iran will end 'immediately after' the US midterm elections on November 3, arguing Tehran is trying to prolong the conflict and keep fuel prices high to damage him politically before the vote. Trump said the US is no longer seeking a negotiated end to the war, stating 'we're so far down the line, they have very little country left right now,' as fighting continued in the Strait of Hormuz with no resolution yet in sight.

Russia resumes drone attacks on Kyiv after weekend pause during US envoy visit, killing one
Russia launched a daytime drone attack on Kyiv on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, killing one person and injuring at least 16, including two children, and damaging residential buildings, ending a brief lull in strikes on the capital that had coincided with a weekend visit by US envoys Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff for peace negotiations. The attack followed a barrage a day earlier, on September 8, that killed two people and involved two ballistic missiles, 31 cruise missiles and 142 drones, which Ukrainian forces said they shot down or suppressed in large part.

OpenAI says internal AI model solved decades-old Navier-Stokes Millennium Prize problem, amid credit dispute
OpenAI announced on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, that an internal AI model produced a proof addressing the Navier-Stokes existence and smoothness problem, one of seven Millennium Prize Problems that have stood unsolved for roughly 90 years, finding a configuration in which three-dimensional fluid flow breaks down in finite time. The company said the model took 88 hours and used as many as 10,000 concurrent AI agents to complete the work, with formal verification finished on September 6. The announcement was overshadowed by a credit dispute after OpenAI said it began the effort following a rumor tied to Anthropic researcher Levent Alpöge and NYU professor Tristan Buckmaster, whose own work, it turned out, addressed a related but distinct problem involving the forced Euler equations.

Nepal-Tibet flood death toll passes 1,300 as rescuers keep pulling survivors from rubble ten days on
Ten days after catastrophic cross-border floods struck Nepal and Tibet, the combined death toll has climbed past 1,300 with more than 5,000 people still listed as missing, officials said this week, even as rescue teams continue to find survivors: a 60-year-old woman was pulled alive from the upper floor of a collapsed four-story building in Nepal's Nuwakot district, and a Chinese national, Lu Haitao, was rescued from inside a tunnel at the Upper Trishuli-1 Hydropower Project. Nearly 12,000 people have been rescued overall with help from international and domestic aid, and most communication towers in the affected region have now been restored.
