Russian missile strike on Pryluky kills 22, including five children, as death toll climbs
A Russian Kh-101 missile struck a residential apartment building in Pryluky, a town in Ukraine's Chernihiv region, on the morning of October 7, partially collapsing it while many residents were still asleep. The attack was part of a wider barrage of roughly 70 missiles and Shahed drones launched across Ukraine that day. Ukraine's State Emergency Service said the death toll rose through the day as rescuers dug through rubble, reaching 22 dead, including five children, with dozens more injured. More than 500 emergency workers took part in the search-and-rescue effort, which Ukrainian officials said has now ended. Pryluky declared three days of mourning, and President Volodymyr Zelensky said the strike came as Russia's president marked his birthday.

Royal Navy sailor charged with spying for a foreign power under UK's National Security Act
Teddy Young, a 24-year-old serving Royal Navy sailor, has been charged with two offences under the National Security Act 2023 following a Counter Terrorism Policing London investigation. One charge alleges he prepared to disclose protected information; the other alleges he obtained, copied or retained protected information intending to benefit a foreign power. The alleged conduct is said to have taken place between November 2024 and May 2025. Young was arrested at his home in Bedfordshire this week, having previously been detained in Hampshire last year, and was remanded in custody to appear at Westminster Magistrates' Court. Authorities have not named the foreign country allegedly involved, and police said the case is unrelated to the separate, ongoing RAF Fairford investigation.

Canadian poet Anne Carson wins the 2026 Nobel Prize in Literature
The Swedish Academy named 76-year-old Canadian writer and classicist Anne Carson the 2026 Nobel laureate in literature, citing her "bold and inventive oeuvre that, in playful dialogue with the classical tradition, has created new forms for contemporary literature." Carson, known for works including "Autobiography of Red" and "Nox," is celebrated for blending poetry, essay and translation while reworking ancient Greek and Roman texts. The academy said it reached her in Reykjavik, Iceland, where she was reportedly "listening to the wind," and that she was surprised by the news. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney praised her for having "reimagined the classics" with wit and imagination. The prize, worth 12 million Swedish kronor (about $1.2 million), will be presented in Stockholm on December 10.

Hurricane Isaias, first of the Atlantic season, bears down on US Gulf Coast
Isaias strengthened into a Category 2 hurricane over the Gulf of Mexico this week, becoming the first Atlantic hurricane of an unusually quiet 2026 season. Forecasters say it could briefly reach major-hurricane strength before weakening slightly ahead of a landfall expected late Friday or early Saturday somewhere between coastal Mississippi and the Florida Panhandle. States of emergency have been declared in parts of Alabama, Florida and Georgia, with mandatory evacuations ordered in some low-lying areas. Forecasters warn of up to 5 to 7 feet of storm surge near the Mississippi River mouth and Mississippi Sound, plus as much as 15 inches of rain in isolated spots, with heavy rain and wind expected to push inland across the Southeast over the weekend.

NASA's Crew-12 returns to Earth after nearly eight months aboard the ISS
NASA astronauts Jessica Meir and Jack Hathaway, ESA astronaut Sophie Adenot and Roscosmos cosmonaut Andrey Fedyaev undocked from the International Space Station this week, wrapping up a mission that began with their launch on February 13. Their SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule began its roughly 26-hour journey back to Earth before splashing down off the coast of California, clearing the way for the newly arrived Crew-13, which reached the station on October 1. The handover keeps the ISS continuously staffed as the outgoing crew heads to NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston for medical checks after nearly eight months in microgravity.
