ICE shooting of New York man and child sparks outcry from Mayor Mamdani and Gov. Hochul
An ICE operation near Marble Hill in New York City ended in gunfire on October 8 after agents reportedly surrounded a man and a 5-year-old child in his car before firing several rounds. The man was hospitalized; the child is believed to be unharmed. Mayor Zohran Mamdani said early reports of the encounter were alarming and renewed his call to abolish ICE, while Governor Kathy Hochul said New Yorkers "deserve to know exactly what happened." City Councilmember Tiffany Cabán called for ICE to be removed from the city entirely. The identities of the agents and the man involved, and what prompted the confrontation, remained unclear as of the following day.

US envoys Witkoff and Kushner meet Ukrainian delegation in Miami for new peace push
US special envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner met a Ukrainian delegation in Miami on October 9 to discuss new ideas aimed at producing a unified proposal to end Russia's war on Ukraine, following Vladimir Putin's rejection of an earlier US plan. Reuters reported Kyiv's delegation was expected to include the head of President Zelensky's office, Kirill Budanov, alongside Sergey Kislitsa, David Arakhamia and Rustem Umerov. Officials said the agenda could eventually extend to a trilateral session involving Russian representatives, continuing a series of Miami-based rounds that have run since late last year without yet producing a breakthrough.

Russian overnight strikes knock out power to 200,000 Kharkiv households
Russia launched a fresh barrage against Ukraine's energy and gas infrastructure overnight into October 10, leaving nearly 200,000 households in Kharkiv without electricity, regional governor Oleh Syniehubov said. Blackouts also hit nine other regions of the country as well as Kyiv. Energy crews were working to restore damaged infrastructure, but emergency outages remained in place across Kharkiv as repairs continued. The attack extends a monthslong campaign of strikes on Ukraine's power grid that Ukrainian officials say has left barely a day without an assault on energy facilities since summer.
