German engineers run a compressor-free hydrogen turbine for a record 303 seconds
Researchers at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology have operated a hydrogen gas turbine that generates its own pressure through detonation waves rather than a mechanical compressor, keeping it running for 303 seconds and breaking NASA's previous record of 250 seconds for this compressorless approach. Conventional gas turbines burn up to half their power just running the compressor that pressurizes incoming air; the KIT design instead uses rapid, controlled detonation waves in the combustion chamber to do that job through fluid dynamics alone, an effect that works especially well with hydrogen because of its fast reaction speed. The team, which presented the milestone at Hannover Messe earlier this year, says the approach could eventually enable lighter, cheaper and substantially more efficient turbines for clean electricity generation and even aviation, unlocking a new tier of performance for hydrogen-fueled power systems.

RWE's GET H2 Nukleus project has delivered its first renewable hydrogen from two 100-megawatt electrolysis units in Lingen, Germany, through a 120-kilometer pipeline network to Evonik's chemical park in Marl, marking the launch of one of Europe's first integrated hydrogen supply chains at industrial scale. The hydrogen meets EU rules for renewable fuels of non-biological origin, and RWE plans to bring the Lingen site up to 200 megawatts of electrolysis capacity by the end of 2026 before reaching its full 300-megawatt design, at which point it will produce 5.6 tonnes of green hydrogen per hour. The milestone gives heavy industry in Germany's Ruhr region a working example of pipeline-delivered green hydrogen replacing fossil-based feedstock, a step widely seen as essential for decarbonizing sectors like chemicals and steel that are hard to electrify directly.
