Stanford study ties estrogen-only hormone therapy to sharply lower Alzheimer's risk
A Stanford Medicine study published August 12, 2026 in Neurology found that women who used estrogen-only menopausal hormone therapy had 35% lower Alzheimer's pathology and 39% lower dementia odds than women who never used hormone therapy. Researchers examined post-mortem brain tissue from 21,462 participants, comparing 258 women who had used estrogen-only therapy with roughly 2,701 who had not, looking for amyloid plaques and neurofibrillary tangles associated with Alzheimer's disease. Papua New Guinea, Vanuatu, Fiji and the Solomon Islands are moving ahead with the Melanesian Ocean Corridor of Reserves, a transboundary network of marine protected areas across their territorial waters in the southwestern Pacific's Coral Triangle, reporting showed in early August 2026. Papua New Guinea is planning a 214,000-square-kilometer no-take sanctuary in western Manus, an area roughly the size of Great Britain, while Vanuatu has designated a 71,000-square-kilometer fully protected zone around Torba Province and Fiji has pledged to protect 15% of its waters by the end of the year. World-first fridge-free vaccine trial succeeds, could expand access for hardest-to-reach communities
University Hospital Southampton and biotech Stablepharma announced August 5, 2026 that a phase 1 trial of SPVX02, a reformulated tetanus-diphtheria vaccine that needs no refrigeration, met its safety and efficacy goals, with results published in eClinicalMedicine, part of The Lancet group. All 60 healthy adult volunteers in the randomized trial achieved protective antibody levels against both diseases within 28 days, with an immune response comparable to existing licensed vaccines and no vaccine-related serious adverse events. The vaccine remained stable for at least two years at temperatures up to 30°C and survived repeated swings between -20°C and +40°C, raising hopes it could reach isolated communities that lack reliable cold-chain infrastructure while cutting the emissions associated with vaccine refrigeration and transport.
