"Rainbow-on-a-chip" breakthrough could unlock 6G networks and precision quantum timing
An international team including researchers from Loughborough University, the University of Sussex, City University of Hong Kong, INRS-EMT and Swinburne University reported on August 23, 2026 that they had built a rice-grain-sized photonic chip that generates a highly organized "rainbow" of light, known as a microcomb, made up of many precisely spaced frequencies like the teeth of a comb. The stable, evenly spaced output can carry multiple high-frequency signals at once, a capability the team says could boost the speed and capacity of future 6G communications while also enabling extremely precise timing for quantum technologies, navigation, radar and space-based systems. Yeast supplement retrains bone marrow immune cells to fight cancer more effectively
