New Zealand's kākāpō have their biggest breeding season on record, smashing the 2019 mark

The Department of Conservation's Kākāpō Recovery Programme confirmed this week that the 2026 breeding season is the biggest on record for the critically endangered flightless parrot, with 78 females nesting across predator-free islands, at least 256 eggs laid in 80 nests, and at least 106 chicks hatched — well past the previous record of 85 chicks set in 2019. As of the latest count, 99 chicks remain alive, with a handful being treated at Dunedin Wildlife Hospital for health issues, and the oldest chick of the season has already reached the 150-day milestone needed to be counted toward the population, nudging the total number of kākāpō up to 236 for the first time in four years.

Stanford researchers supercharge natural killer cells to break into solid tumors

Stanford Medicine researchers reported in Science Translational Medicine, highlighted August 24-25, 2026, that they identified a subset of tissue-resident natural killer (NK) cells — marked by the proteins CD39, CD49a and CD103 — that can infiltrate and control solid epithelial tumor growth in mice, and developed a strategy to boost these immune cells' ability to break through the defenses tumors use to keep immune cells out. Solid tumors have long been far harder to treat with cell-based immunotherapies than blood cancers because they are difficult for immune cells to penetrate and can actively suppress nearby immune activity; the findings point toward more effective, and potentially more accessible, NK-cell therapies for solid cancers.

Single-atom catalyst unlocks near-complete conversion of stubborn plant waste into valuable chemicals

Researchers from the University of Manchester and Hebei University of Technology reported in ACS Catalysis, highlighted August 24, 2026, that they built a "single-atom catalyst" — isolated ruthenium atoms anchored in nitrogen-doped carbon — that breaks down lignin, the tough structural molecule making up as much as 35% of agricultural and forestry waste, into valuable phenolic chemicals under mild conditions. The catalyst achieved near-complete conversion of model lignin compounds and produced high yields of useful aromatic products when applied to real lignin samples from multiple biomass sources, a step toward turning forestry and crop waste that is otherwise burned or discarded into renewable building blocks for fuels and plastics.

Wind and solar overtake gas in global electricity generation for the first time

Analysis from energy think tank Ember found that wind and solar generated a combined record 531 terawatt-hours of electricity worldwide in April 2026, surpassing gas-fired generation of 477 TWh for the first time in a single month, with renewables supplying 22% of global electricity against gas's 20%. The milestone marks a sharp structural shift from April 2021, when gas generation was roughly level with today's figure but more than double the combined output of wind and solar, and Ember's broader Global Electricity Review found wind and solar met all of the growth in global electricity demand during 2025 — driven by improving economics and countries seeking to cut exposure to volatile imported gas prices.

Brazil's Atlantic Forest logs its lowest deforestation since monitoring began in 1985

Long-term monitoring data reported in August 2026 showed deforestation in Brazil's Atlantic Forest fell to just 8,658 hectares in 2025, down 40% from 14,366 hectares in 2024 and the lowest annual total recorded since satellite monitoring of the biome began in 1985. A second monitoring system operating since 2022 recorded a 28% decline over the same period, from 53,303 to 38,385 hectares. The Atlantic Forest is Brazil's most populous biome, home to roughly 80% of the country's population including Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, and the gains follow a broader nationwide drop in deforestation, with Brazil's non-fire-related forest loss reaching its lowest level since national records began in 2001.
