AI decodes the DNA "switch" that turns on 60% of human genes

A UC San Diego team led by graduate researcher Torrey Rhyne-Carrigg used high-throughput DNA sequencing to measure the gene-expression activity of roughly 500,000 versions of "the initiator," a DNA element that sits at the site where genetic instructions first get expressed into functional products, then trained an AI model that decoded its governing sequence pattern. The model found the initiator present in about 60% of human genes. AI search finds a cheap way to 3D-print NASA's high-performance rocket alloy

Washington State University researchers used an AI system to search more than 100 million possible printer settings for GRCop-42, a NASA copper-chromium-niobium alloy prized in liquid rocket engine combustion chambers for its heat conduction and strength but notoriously difficult and expensive to 3D-print. After just 40 real-world experiments, the system identified six successful printing recipes, including one that worked at a record-low 500 watts. 324-million-year-old fossil reveals insects colonized land through a long amphibious phase
