Light-activated eye drops restore sight in blind mice without gene therapy
A research consortium led by the Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia (IBEC) has developed a new class of photoswitchable drugs, called prosthe6, that restored light perception and visually guided behavior in blind mice, with findings published in the Journal of the American Chemical Society and covered August 28, 2026. The compounds mimic the function of the photoreceptor cells that degenerate in blinding diseases like age-related macular degeneration and retinitis pigmentosa, and two of the most promising versions worked simply as eye drops. Unlike gene therapy, which only helps patients with specific mutations, or invasive electronic retinal implants, the approach is non-invasive, reversible and works regardless of the underlying genetic cause, potentially reaching far more patients.

NASA's Roman Space Telescope launches on mission to probe the dark universe
NASA's Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope launched successfully aboard a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket from Kennedy Space Center on August 30, 2026, beginning a three-month, million-mile journey to its final orbit near the second Lagrange point. Roman will investigate dark energy and dark matter and conduct a broad census of planetary systems, with a field of view at least 100 times larger than Hubble's, potentially capturing light from a billion galaxies over its lifetime. Scientists will spend the coming months calibrating and testing the observatory's instruments, with NASA expecting to release Roman's first images in early 2027.

Cancer therapy puts severe rheumatoid arthritis into drug-free remission in first trial
Doctors at Charite-Universitatsmedizin Berlin reported the world's first clinical trial using CAR T-cell therapy for severe, treatment-resistant rheumatoid arthritis, with results published in Nature Medicine and covered August 27-28, 2026. All six patients, whose disease had not responded to established treatments, saw disease activity fall substantially, and three achieved sustained remission without needing any arthritis medication during up to a year of follow-up. The therapy, adapted from cancer treatment, genetically modifies a patient's own immune cells to clear out the disease-driving B cells and effectively reset part of the immune system; larger trials are still needed before wider clinical use.

Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners' 500MW/1,000MWh Coalburn 1 battery energy storage system reached commercial operation in South Lanarkshire, Scotland, in August 2026, on the site of a former coal mine near Glasgow, and the developer says it is now the largest operational battery storage project in Europe. Two related projects, Coalburn 2 and Devilla, reached financial investment decisions in January 2026 and are due to begin construction in 2027; together the three projects will provide 1.5 GW of power output and 3 GWh of storage capacity, helping the grid absorb more wind and solar power on a site that once produced coal.

The government credits sustained collaboration with WWF and local communities, including biogas programs that reduced reliance on forest firewood, community anti-poaching units, expanded protected areas and new wildlife corridors linking Nepali and Indian tiger habitat. Experts say the growing population now brings new challenges around habitat management and reducing human-tiger conflict.
