A Bundibugyo-strain-specific Ebola vaccine candidate developed by Oxford University and the Serum Institute of India entered a Phase 1 clinical trial in the United Kingdom on July 24, 2026, and Health Canada authorized Moderna to begin its own Phase 1 trial of a candidate mRNA vaccine for the same strain on July 30. The trials are a rapid response to an outbreak of Bundibugyo virus disease, for which no licensed vaccine or treatment previously existed, that has spread across the Democratic Republic of the Congo and into Uganda since May 2026.

The US Department of Agriculture and Department of Health and Human Services announced the Harvest to Hallways initiative on August 24, 2026, committing up to $70 million to upgrade school cafeteria infrastructure such as cold storage and stoves, plus up to $25 million in additional Patrick Leahy Farm to School Grants for fiscal year 2026 to help schools buy locally produced food. HHS is separately investing $30 million to research practical, cost-effective ways to improve the nutritional quality of school meals, and the agencies are encouraging states to adopt a new Pledge for Healthier School Meals.

The Colossal Foundation announced the second cohort of its Species Reintroduction Fund on August 5, 2026, expanding the program, run in partnership with Re:wild, to seven new species across four continents. Chosen from more than $5 million in funding requests, teams working to return threatened wildlife to the wild in Cambodia, the United States, Brazil, Guatemala, Australia and Canada will receive catalytic grants, genetic technologies and technical support as part of the fund's annual $250,000 commitment to rewilding projects.

Colorado Parks and Wildlife shared trail-camera footage on August 7, 2026 showing a lynx kitten with an adult in the wild, a rare confirmation that the state's reintroduced lynx population is still breeding successfully. The Canada lynx, listed as endangered in Colorado since 1976 due to fur trapping and habitat loss, breeds in late winter and produces litters of one to four kittens in May or June, which stay with their mothers for about nine months before venturing out on their own.
