Iran-US war widens as IRGC hits Bahrain and Jordan, Trump revives Hormuz blockade and 20% toll

Iran's Revolutionary Guard launched a fresh wave of retaliatory strikes on July 18, hitting the Sheikh Isa Air Base in Bahrain and the Prince Hassan Air Base in Jordan, extending a conflict that has now run for well over a week since the collapse of a brief US-Iran ceasefire. US forces answered with strikes on infrastructure in Iran's Hormozgan province, damaging bridges and tunnels on routes toward Bandar Abbas and hitting an electricity and desalination plant in the village of Bonji. President Trump announced the US Navy would reimpose its blockade of the Strait of Hormuz and revived a 20% fee on cargo transiting the strait, days after having dropped the toll in favor of investment deals with Gulf states. The UN's International Maritime Organization reiterated that it "stands firmly against" mandatory transit tolls, calling the move without legal basis.

Andy Burnham confirmed as UK Labour leader, set to become Britain's seventh PM in a decade

Andy Burnham, the former mayor of Greater Manchester, was declared leader of Britain's governing Labour Party on July 17 after securing nominations from 379 of the party's 403 MPs, the sole candidate in a contest triggered by Keir Starmer's resignation. Bangladesh measles death toll climbs to 784 as outbreak drags into fifth month

Bangladesh's combined tally of confirmed and suspected measles deaths reached 784 as of July 18, after four more children died from measles-like symptoms in the preceding 24 hours. The toll breaks down to 689 suspected and 95 laboratory-confirmed deaths. Since the outbreak began in mid-March, more than 116,700 suspected cases and over 14,300 lab-confirmed infections have been recorded nationwide, with authorities reporting nearly 100,000 hospitalizations, most of whom have since recovered. The World Health Organization has flagged the outbreak, driven by gaps in routine immunization, as one of the country's most severe public health crises in years.
